The Salisbury Steak Recipe That Gets Better Every Damn Time

The Permanent Roommate once asked “what’s your favorite meal that I make?” That’s like asking which kid I like better. I know the answer to both but I’d give an honest answer to either question.

Instead of giving the number one answer I offered this compromise — “I’ll tell you my top five in no particular order.”

This salisbury steak recipe is top 5. Press me hard enough and I might rank it number one. Press harder and I’ll probably fart. (Dad jokes)

I love this recipe for many reasons —

Reason #1: I love meat.

Reason #2: I love meat in a brown sauce.

Reason #3: I love meat in a brown sauce and hooking it up with mashed potatoes.

Here’s the Permanent Roommates salisbury steak recipe…

Salisbury Steak Recipe


1 can French Onion Soup
1 1/2 pounds of ground beef
1/2 cup bread crumbs
1 egg
1 tablespoon of flour
2 tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce
1/4 cup of ketchup
1/2 tablespoon mustard powder
1/4 cup of water
salt & pepper


Combine ground beef with half of the can of French onion soup, breadcrumbs, egg, salt and pepper. Form into oval patties and cook in skillet until browned on both sides (About 3 minutes per side over med-high heat.)

In a bowl, combine the rest of your can of French onion soup, flour, ketchup, water, Worcestershire sauce and mustard powder. Pour sauce over patties and lower heat.

Cover and simmer for 20 minutes, stirring and flipping occasionally.

Just A Few Notes

Seriously, this meal gets better every time. I eat it and go “damn I don’t remember it tasting THIS good.” It’s the perfect meal for Sunday afternoons in the winter. Unless you live in a place where it’s warm all the time. In that case, I loathe you.


I think I love this meal so much because I love anything that reminds me of being a kid and occasionally, at my aunt’s house, I’d eat TV dinners. One of my favorites was salisbury steak. Do they still make TV dinners? You could say yes or no and I’d believe either.

Don’t ever compare your wife’s cooking to a TV dinner though.

She added the scallions. I told her this ain’t no cookbook shoot. She stabbed me with a butter knife. That might have been “TV Dinner” comment related.
