If you’re reading this article, congrats! You made it through another holiday season.
So did I. Thankfully.
I had Covid. I’m obviously fine. It was a mild case—a few days of a nasty head cold and a really intense headache for one day. I just got some rest and chugged Mucinex and all the symptoms dissipated after about a week.
I self-isolated for 14 days to be safe. At the time, I happened to be reading The Obstacle is the Way by Ryan Holiday. The book was a huge help during those fourteen days. The book had such a positive influence that I named it one of the eight books everyone must read in 2022.
One of the biggest takeaways from the book involves taking the unforeseen setbacks in life and turning those misfortunes into an advantage. My disadvantage wasn’t the virus. While being sick sucks, it was the two weeks stuck inside the house that really weighed heavy on my mind.

No kickboxing or boxing. No gym. No library. Not to mention all the Christmas activities I had to miss and being forced to do the bulk of my Christmas shopping online. Ugh.
The Obstacle is the Way was instrumental in reframing my situation to see the positive in getting Covid and being stuck alone for two weeks.
First, it made me realize I should be thankful my case was mild. Hundreds of thousands of people were not so lucky.
Second, the book showed me how to turn chicken shit into chicken salad.
In those two weeks, I managed to:
- finished up projects that lingered on my to-do list for months
- started projects that I’d put off for almost a year
- planned out my content calendar for most of 2022
- shot more reels
- wrote more notes
- did an outline for my next book project
I did all of these times during the times when I’d typically be out doing other things. I even still managed to work out regularly and learned to shop online like the rest of the world (although that skill could come back to bite me on the wallet.)
I recommend people read the book, but if you’re too lazy for that, then take this one lesson away with you – make the best of even the shittiest of circumstances.
Find the silver lining, focus on the half-full portion of the glass, and find a fantastic chicken salad recipe for the next time life hands you chicken shit.

Remember that article I discussed earlier regarding the eight books everyone must read in 2022? Well, a ton of people got butthurt when I said, “audiobooks aren’t reading.” Here’s my rebuttal.
