(I wrote this story for my LinkedIn page but I’m sharing it here for this audience because I believe many people can relate to this situation.)
Earlier this month, an executive search company inquired about my interest in an open position. The job? Meme Creator for a “high net worth executive.”
I expressed interest in the position and a phone interview was set-up for the following week. On the day of the interview, the person conducting the interview texted and asked to push the call back two hours. I obliged.
During the course of the phone interview, the interviewee (also the owner of the company) asked why I’m giving up freelance and looking for a permanent role. I told him that after six years, I’m tired of chasing jobs, chasing money, and chasing down new contacts once editors and contacts leave/quit/get laid off.
I continued, “The most frustrating part of all is getting ghosted by companies after working together for months. No warning. The point person just stops answering my emails and I’m forced to frantically find work to replace that lost income.”
The owner said he completely understands my situation. He’s had similar situations over the years.
He asked me to resend my resume and links to all my work and social media accounts. I sent the follow-up email right after hanging up the phone. In the email, I thanked him for taking the time to interview me.
A few days later, I texted another “thank you” and told him I’m extremely interested in the position.
He never responded to either the email or the text. I’ve heard nothing about the position since the call.
I guess he didn’t COMPLETELY understand my situation.
