Parenting Note #746: Create

Parenting Note #746

Parents do this funny thing where they tell kids that they can do anything they want to do in life but don’t adhere to the same advice for their own life, plans, and goals.

The usual excuses come spewing out of their mouths.

“I don’t have time.”

“I’m too old.”

“It’s too late to start now.”

“I don’t know where to begin.”

And I’m going to go ahead and say bullshit.

You can find the time. If you’ve binge-watched anything on Netflix lately, or spend hours scrolling TikTok, you’ve got the time.

You’re never too old. Sam Walton opened his first Walmart at 44. Henry Ford built his first car at 45. Julia Child didn’t become a famous TV chef until she was pushing 50.

The best place to begin isn’t always at the start. Just doing anything to get a step closer to your goal is a fine place to start. And today seems as like as good a day as any.

Whatever your goal, you’re going to be bad at it, but you already know that and that’s likely the reason you’re putting it off.

Do you know who else was bad at something the first time? Everyone.

“Sucking at something is the first step towards being sorta good at something.” – Ryan North

The next time you’re preaching to the kids about trying and failing, stop and ask, “Am I talking to the kids, or am I talking to myself?”
